How we forecast air pollution in Wakefield

The air quality forecasts for Wakefield are made using the YourAir Service from CERC. YourAir is the world's only air quality forecasting system that tells you about the pollution in individual streets.

The forecasts use a special method that allows the changes in air quality from street-to-street to be determined, so that people affected by air pollution can make the healthiest choices for their lifestyle or for the health of their children.

The forecasts are made by combining the latest weather forecasts, with detailed knowledge of local traffic patterns, power stations and other factors, as well as information on regional air pollution coming from the rest of the UK and from Continental Europe. These are then converted to maps that are easy to read and interpret.

Over the coming months we will improve the service further by introducing postcode lookup and email alert facilities.

The YourAir Service is provided by CERC as part of the European Space Agency's PROMOTE consortium. PROMOTE is a service to provide high quality forecasts of air quality for Europe, combining the latest satellite data and advanced forecasting methods to give the best accuracy possible.
