Complex Flows/Wind Energy

The CERC model FLOWSTAR has been designed to calculate the impact of complex terrain on mean airflow and turbulence at very high resolution.  Both changes in surface elevation and surface roughness can be considered.  CERC's consultancy team has used the model for the following applications:

• Prediction of the wind field for wind farm assessments.

• Wind engineering, for example, mean flow and turbulence along the length of a planned bridge.

• Forecasting - assessing where forecasts are exposed to destructive winds.

FLOWPOR, a modified version of FLOWSTAR, has been used to investigate flow through porous structures.
