2008: Olympics to get street-scale forecasts of air quality
CERC and partners Capital Normal University of Beijing and
the Dutch institute KNMI will be providing street-scale air quality
forecasts for the Beijing Olympics. The forecasts will be starting in
July 2008 before the opening of Olympic Games. Maps showing the forecasts
will be posted daily on the world-wide-web. The system is based on the
successful London airTEXT system of pollution forecasts and alerts www.airTEXT.info

CERC’s Managing Director David Carruthers said,
“This is an exciting project and although the timescale for completion
is challenging we know we have good partners and a proven forecasting
service. We are looking forward to providing public information for
such a key event.”
These forecasts will be made available as part of the
DRAGON 2 programme. DRAGON is a co-operation between the European Space
Agency (ESA) and the National Remote Sensing Centre of China (NRSCC)
under China’s Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST).

April 2008: ADMS User Group
meeting, China
The annual Chinese ADMS user group meeting took place in Beijing over
two days in March, with over 45 delegates.
February 2008: ADMS-Airport
general release
February 2008 saw the general release of ADMS-Airport, which
was used in the recent government study of Heathrow Airport. ADMS-Airport
has all the features of ADMS-Urban for modelling concentrations of pollutants
in a range of scenarios from rural to complex urban environments, in
addition it models aircraft sources as moving jets, capturing the nature
of dispersion from accelerating, buoyant engine exhausts.
ADMS-Airport has been used to model air quality at London’s
Heathrow airport for the Department for Transport’s (DfT) Project
for the Sustainable Development of Heathrow (PSDH) – Adding Capacity
at Heathrow, which is available
here. It was used following the recommendations of the PSDH Model
Inter-comparison Study, available
here.

February 2008: ADMS
4 Validation
CERC released ADMS 4 in June 2007. ADMS 4 includes a number of significant
new features – please refer to the ‘What’s
New in ADMS 4’ for full details. The model underwent an extensive
validation process prior to release to demonstrate its fitness for purpose,
including:
-
-
Validating model output against field data testing
flat, complex terrain, and the buildings module. The results are
shown on our documentation page.
