Forecasting the air quality in Klang district, Malaysia

CERC hosts an air quality forecasting system for the Klang District in Malaysia, under the NIHR Global Health Research Unit on Respiratory Health (RESPIRE). Funded by the UK National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), RESPIRE aims to deliver low-cost, scalable policy and clinical interventions to reduce respiratory disease and death in Asia. CERC is working with air quality and health researchers at the Universiti Malaya, with additional contributions from academics at the University of Edinburgh and the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.

Previous research under RESPIRE, by the Universiti Malaya, identified that haze episodes in Malaysia exacerbate asthma symptoms. The researchers are now working with a Klang District cohort to assess whether air quality alerts provide at-risk patients with sufficient information to take preventative action, thus influencing health outcomes.

The air quality forecasting and alerting system developed and supported by CERC uses ADMS-Urban and the CAMS Global air quality forecast. The Universiti Malaya have developed a mobile phone app to notify patients about episodes of poor air quality, using data from the forecasting system.
