Forecasting the air quality in Riga, Latvia

Riga forecast map image

Residents of Riga, Latvia benefit from a free online air quality forecasting service Riga airTEXT, launched in 2018. Riga airTEXT informs the public with air quality alerts by text message and emails. Air quality forecasts up to three days ahead are available online and in a mobile phone app. Information is also available from the Riga airTEXT Facebook and X (Twitter) pages.

Weather forecasts, forecasts of pollution across Europe and detailed data on pollution sources across Riga are fed into ADMS-Urban to produce the air quality forecasts. The concentrations of four pollutants are calculated: nitrogen dioxide (NO2), particulates (PM10 and PM2.5) and ozone (O3). From the concentrations the daily Air Quality Index (AQI) for each pollutant is derived. Riga airTEXT reports the AQI corresponding to the pollutant which gives the highest value of the AQI.

Thanks to Riga airTEXT, the public can prepare in advance for short-term periods of poor air quality. People with asthma or heart disease can take positive steps, such as keeping an asthma inhaler nearby or avoiding strenuous outdoor activity.

Riga airTEXT was developed by UK and Latvian scientists from CERC and ELLE with financial support from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS).
